How Does Invisalign Straighten Your Teeth?
By now you’ve heard about Invisalign, either from advertising or word of mouth. But, understanding how Invisalign is capable of straightening crooked teeth may still be a mystery for you. Additionally, you may be curious as to how Invisalign compares to metal braces for straightening teeth.
Why is Invisalign Better than Metal Braces for Teeth Straightening?
Unlike traditional metal wire braces that are used to position teeth with continuous pressure to shift within your mouth, Invisalign is a teeth straightening system that is made of clear plastic, removable trays.
The plastic liner trays are custom-made to fit the structure of your dental anatomy based on a 3-D model of your mouth. They comfortably fit in the mouth, to shift the teeth into the desired position for straightening. Invisalign has increasingly become the more popular choice when compared to wire braces, because they do not need to be worn 24/7 to be effective and when they are worn they mostly go unnoticed.
How Does Invisalign Work to Straighten Your Teeth?
The Invisalign system’s process is straightforward– through gentle pressure, Invisalign pushes your teeth into the desired position to straighten them.
It is recommended to wear your custom Invisalign liners for 20 hours a day consistently to see the effects of the teeth straightening system. While 20 hours a day may sound like a lot, it allows you to remove Invisalign’s liners when eating or at other moments of your choice– a luxury that metal braces does not offer.
It is through continuous pressure over long periods of time that Invisalign manages to shift the positioning and direction of your teeth. One of the unique aspects of how to get straight teeth with Invisalign is that, as your teeth adapt to the plastic tray, your dentist’s office will then provide you with a new set of trays to achieve further results.
Through continuously receiving a new set of trays that gradually reposition your teeth, your mouth does not feel the same level of pain associated with metal braces. Instead, the process for straightening your teeth with Invisalign allows your mouth to adapt to each new Invisalign liner tray. When your teeth have responded positively to that tray’s repositioning, it’s time to further adapt to a new liner until the final results are achieved.
The Process: How to Get Straight Teeth with Invisalign
Here is the 5-step process for how to get straight teeth with Invisalign:
Schedule a dental consultation.
Your first step to a beautiful smile starts by scheduling a consultation with our Invisalign dentist, Dr. Kaushal Gandhi. During this consultation, the dentist will determine if you are a good candidate for the Invisalign teeth straightening system and discuss the process of the treatment.
This is the time for you to inquire as to any questions or concerns you may have regarding Invisalign, and decide if it is the best course of action for you to straighten your teeth.
Custom aligners get created.
Dr. Gandhi takes X-rays and impressions of your teeth to create 3D models. This advanced technology allows for the creation of a series of clear plastic aligners that will, over time, gradually transform your smile and give you straightened teeth.
Wear your custom Invisalign trays.
After your plastic trays are customized to your mouth, it’s your job to make sure you wear them for 20 hours a day on average so that your teeth can respond positively to shifting that repositions them into place. For results to be a success, you should only remove your Invisalign trays when you eat, brush your teeth, and floss. Since you will receive a series of alignment trays, you will switch out your old trays for new ones about every 2 weeks.
Attend follow-up dental appointments.
Throughout the process of getting straight teeth with Invisalign, you will attend follow-up appointments with Dr. Gandhi every 6-8 weeks. These follow-up visits are meant to review the progress and ensure that the Invisalign system is working with your teeth.
Enjoy your new smile.
As long as the patient adheres to the 20-hour-a-day schedule of wearing Invisalign’s alignment trays, results usually take between 12-15 months before you can stop using the teeth straightening system.
When you reach the point that you no longer need to use Invisalign’s clear trays daily, your dentist will then provide you with a retainer. When and for how long you wear the retainer will be based on individual patient needs– the retainer is used to maintain the results of your newly straightened teeth.
The only thing left for you to do now is to enjoy your refreshed, straightened smile!
